PM Modi’s 79th Independence Day Address: Self-Reliance, GST Reforms, and Strong Stance Against Pakistan
On August 15, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India’s Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, unveiling major economic reforms and emphasizing defense, self-reliance, and national security in his address.
Prime Minister Modi commenced his speech by highlighting the historic achievements and sacrifices of freedom fighters, emphasizing patriotism and unity. He unveiled new GST reforms—proposing simplified slabs (5% and 18%) and a luxury/sin goods slab at 40%, saying, “India needs a next-generation tax code to match global benchmarks.”
Focusing on self-reliance amid U.S. tariffs, Modi urged industry and youth to pioneer domestic production of fertilizers, jet engines, and EV batteries. He launched the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, focusing on youth employment and expanding manufacturing.
Modi took a strong stance against Pakistan, vowing to punish any future attacks and praising Operation Sindoor for its decisive counter-terror strikes inside Pakistan. He stated, “We will never tolerate nuclear blackmail. Our forces have shown the world India’s resolve.” He highlighted the successful operations in Pahalgam, where recent terrorist violence led to military retaliation.
On migration, the PM announced a demographic mission to tackle illegal immigration, aiming at verification and documentation, especially of Bangladeshi migrants.
Political developments included Congress leaders skipping the event – sparking media controversy and debate. Internationally, Russian President Putin congratulated India for its progress and global standing.
Security was tight, with over 11,000 officials deployed in Delhi. The celebration was marked by patriotic performances and tributes to India’s legacy.
